presumably a doctor told him he had type 1. That means the doctor is repsonsible for seeing to it that both you and your son are educated about his disease. There is also a huge amount of information on the web, suggest you do some research yourself.

Search for your local JDRF online and call them. They will find you help. You may need a new doctor … his new endo should be available for any questions you have.

JDRF is a wonderful organization (JDRF.org) They probably will work with your local hospital and give you MUCH literature to teach you what you need. Your Dr should be helping you. If it’s been 9 days, you should be pretty well versed in Type 1 by now. Contact JDRF.

Ask your endocrinologist about support groups in your area. As others advised – get in touch with your local JDRF chapter. A very useful website is http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com
Don’t treat your child differently than you did 10 days ago. He’s not fragile or an invalid. He can still play sports, have friends, ride a skateboard, eat at Mc Donalds…. you’ll just need to plan for these things where you just did them without thought before. He will still be able to eat birthday cake and have a piece of candy. Go to all the classes that the endocrinologist can arrange for you. Take notes and don’t leave the class if you are confused about something.
Type 1 is not the end of the world. It’s more like a big inconvienience.

If you want to educate yourself, and as the parent of a type 1 diabetic you should, try getting a copy of Diabetes for Dummies. When I was diagnosed with Diabetes, I read over a dozen books on the subject and this one was by far the best and most informative. It’s written by a bay area Endocrinologist and he is straight forward and honest about the disease. You should be getting referred to an Endocrinologist by your PCP (Primary Care Physician), they specialize in diabetes.
