What could possibly be the next great discovery for mankind on the planet??

09 Jun

A source of energy in a seemingly endless supply thereby eliminating the need for commercial trade of natural resources? A Major medical breakthrough that unlocks the keys to illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, ALS et al? A complete end to all warfare and proliferation of tolerance and peace on a global scale? Or… have we gone as far as we can go, celebrating only small advancements in science and culture with no major breakthroughs on the scale of the renaissance period. (1300 a.d. – 1600 a.d.) Also known as the age of enlightenment, this period saw more advancements in culture than any other period in history comparitively. My fear is that we have peaked. The thought that the global fight for natural resources (oil) could escalate to a global shell game, that we are 50+ years from truly understanding the human genome and world peace has become a pipe dream leaves me to wonder. What is next??? I hoping for… (this is where I lose credibility) … alien contact
I know the alien contact thing just wrecks my credibility. I was loathe to even mention it, It is meant only to illustrate my wanting for something great to happen. I don’t think J.C. is planning a second coming anytime soon (if you believe in that) and things just seem to be getting worse which is why Richards answer is more portentous than I care to admit. Are we near our end??

Why doesn’t the media tell us more about genetically modified food?

07 Jun

I have seen little in the media other than what supports the profit agenda of the biotech corporations. Is that changing?

See for interest this recent article from Huffington post. Is its presence a sign that perhaps the mainstream media is starting to “notice” the science that contradicts the science of the biotech corporations?

Will we see more coverage of these issues in the media?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeffrey-smith/will-obamas-food-safety-t_b_178127.html

Quote for those who don’t follow links:

“Will Obama’s Food Safety Team Finally Regulate the Biggest Food Safety Hazard of Our Time?

If President Obama’s new Food Safety Working Group dedicates all their time and credentials to prevent future food recalls, they will have saved thousands of people–but forsaken millions.

Over the last decade, our radically changing diet has ushered in the explosive growth of food-related ailments, such as allergies, asthma, obesity, diabetes, autism, infertility, gastro-intestinal disorders, and learning disabilities. Of all the changes in our food, the most dangerous transformation was the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops.

When these gene-spliced concoctions, such as GM soy, corn, canola, and cottonseed, came on the scene in 1996, the proportion of Americans suffering from three or more chronic ailments. After just 9 years, that nearly doubled to 13%. GM foods are the prime suspect.

Government policy at odds with science

Until now, the government has sidestepped the controversy by hiding behind FDA policy, which asserts that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are “substantially equivalent” to natural foods and therefore don’t require any safety studies. But as Obama acknowledged, “many of the laws and regulations governing food safety in America” are outdated.

In truth, the FDA’s GMO policy was not even up-to-date when it was implemented in May 1992. FDA documents made public from a lawsuit revealed that virtually all the agency scientists asked to comment voiced strong warnings that GMOs may cause serious health problems. But the FDA was under orders from the White House to fast track GM foods, and the person in charge of FDA policy was the former attorney of biotech giant Monsanto–and later become their vice president. The scientists and the science were ignored.

Now that animals fed GMOs–in labs and farms around the world–have exhibited symptoms related to the growing list of diseases in the US population, the President’s Food Safety team, including Dr. Margaret Hamburg as FDA Commissioner, must update GMO regulation. A scientifically sound regulation would translate into an immediate ban of current GM crops, and the implementation of rigorous safety testing requirements before any GMO was put back into the food supply. And certainly mandatory labeling, as promised by President Obama during his campaign, must accompany any GM food approval.

Presidents and industry insiders avoid GMOs

The Obama family has wisely opted out of exposing themselves to GM foods by requiring organic–and therefore non-GMO–foods served at the White House. They are even planting an organic garden on the south lawn of the White House, to feature 55 types of vegetables.

The Bush family also had an organic kitchen policy. Laura Bush was “adamant” about it, but kept it all quiet.

Even at Monsanto, many in-the-know employees won’t consume the company’s own GM creations. Back in 1999, the management of the cafeteria at Monsanto’s UK headquarters in High Wycombe, England wrote:

“In response to concern raised by our customers . . . we have decided to remove, as far as possible, genetically modified soy and maize (corn) from all food products served in our restaurant. . . . We have taken the above steps to ensure that you, the customer, can feel confident in the food we serve.”

And one former Monsanto scientist told me that his colleagues, who were safety testing milk from cows injected with the company’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone, decided to stop drinking milk–unless it was organic.

It’s now time to let us all opt out of this dangerous and failed GM experiment. If Obama’s team is serious about food safety and public health, they must take GMOs off our plates and put them back into the laboratory.

How to deal with food addiction?

06 Jun

My fiance is having problems with food addiction. I honestly believe that he is addicted- he is generally very thoughtful and honest but he will do anything to get junk food, even lie. I supply lots of fruits, veggies, etc, and I myself am a health nut, but he eats these AND sneaks junk food throughout the day.
He finally came clean that he has been untruthful about his eating habits after I became very concerned at his inability to lose weight even with diet and a very rigorous exercise plan. He has an “on-call” job which makes doctor appointments nearly impossible. An average day consists of fast food sandwiches, king size candy bars, hostess snacks, etc…
He comes from a family which struggles with obesity and diabetes due to obesity, he is the smallest weight-wise of them but is steadily gaining weight.
What can I do to help him? Are there any books or websites that specialize in this that are any good?

Medical Questions for Biological Father?

05 Jun

He will be out soon in 2 weeks. I found his biological father. He told me to look for him before he left. I just a name and number… I am sure it is him because with the name and number is his wife’s name and children name which my husband did supply. Now I have the number I want to call it. I don’t want my husband to call it only to hear him get shot down. That will break my heart to see if he was hurt.

Another reason I would like to call for his medical history. We do have a son and it would be good to know some medical history in case any unforeseen events come up.

What kind of medical questions I should ask? I know diabetes, heart conditions, high cholesterol, allergies, cancer and asthma. Am I missing anything to ask?
Oh sorry. I forgot the first sentence. He is in bootcamp for the Marines (My husband).

Worried about health? Advice needed…?

04 Jun

I had a pretty bad childhood with my biological mum being a drug addict and basically moving from man to man, I was left to look after my younger sister who was 1 from the age of 4 to 5 1/2, and being so young, I couldn’t cook any proper meals and my mum basically shoved things like chocolate and sweets down our throats for meals, (she did this until I was 5 1/2). Ever since then, I get discouraged eating meals, and basically eat with my eyes and sense of smell. Anything I don’t like the smell or look of I won’t eat.

The thing is, I hardly eat proper food any more, even after I eat something small I get full and bloated. On average I can drink anything from 7, 9 or even 10 drinks + a day. The strange thing is I drink more than I eat, and people continuously mention that I need to eat more, ”there’s nothing of me” and my step-sister has even complained I’m basically starving myself to death. But I’m not. I love food, it’s just I hate the thought of eating too much and putting on too much weight.

However, because of my diet when I was younger, I’m basically ”addicted” to sugar. Anything that doesn’t have it, I’m not interested in eating it. I hate the idea of this. I do eat plenty of fruit and vegetables at home that is, anywhere else and its nothing but junk food with a plentiful supply of sugar. But now I’m getting quite worried, a while back, I had serious painful chest pains. I do not suffer with any heart conditions, nor was it indigestion, I’ve had that several times, and it was nothing like I’ve ever felt before. It felt as if my chest was being torn a part. I’m only 16 1/2 years old, and feel the need that my diet will end up leading me to something bad. People are already telling me I’m going to end up with diabetes or heart disease with the amount of sugar I’m eating, but I can’t help it, if I don’t have sugary food I won’t eat.

Also, it’s getting to the point that I feel like I’m ”watching” my weight, if I gain a little too much, I feel hopeless and overweight. I’m nearly 5”7 and around 8 stone at 16 1/2 years old. I’m not sure if that weight is good for my height or what, but I can’t help but look at other girls comparing to myself. It often enough has made me want to cry and lose all my weight. I’ve even gone without eating hardly anything for a few days just to get rid of it. I don’t know what to do. Talking to my parents is useless as they’ll just brush it off and tell me I’m acting stupid. I have no where else to turn to. Any advice?
EDIT: I get plentiful of exercise. I frequently do horse riding, walk to and fro from school each and every day, also including walking around to lessons and such, as well as sport activities during school time. I also walk to the farm now and then which is 1 1/2 hours walk away at a steady pace.
Susan Yarrawonga;

Thanks for posting that site. Its shown me that I need to change or prepare for a road of ill suffering and a bout of antagonising regrets. I already have asthma (born with it) and have found recently that my vision has been decreasing and my eyesight is getting a little blurred. I find that I get dizziness all too often and headaches also.

Are there any ways to replace the sugar with something less dangerous health wise, and more nutritious and rich in supplements needed by the body?

Could I have been misdiagnosed as a diabetic?

03 Jun

I’ve been diagnosed as a type one diabetic for almost three years.

I (and my family) was told after I was taken to the hospital with a blood glucose level of 934. I had the usual symptoms..tiredness, hunger, thirst, and weight loss; plus a great great grandfather who had diabetes. They told me that I still was producing a small amount of insulin..yet with type one your insulin supply is supposed to be depleted…?

After being diagnosed for about two years, I started having odd reactions to lantus (long lasting insulin) and decided to take myself off. I became sick for a few days, then was covered in hives for another 4 days. Yet after this subsided, my blood sugars regulated into a normal range for night/early morning readings.

Then I started changing my eating habits, so that the units of insulin per day were reduced to under 5 units. Some days depending on how much exercise and what types of foods I was eating.

I am on a healthy diet now and I exercise at least 4 times a week. Some days I don’t need to take any insulin at all. Some days I need a shot or two, but each shot is 3 or less units. My blood sugar keeps in a normal range.
I can have most vegetables with out insulin. I can have citrus, strawberries, nuts, and wine without insulin too.

I think it’s possible that I was misdiagnosed. What do you think?

No matter what I find out in the next few months or years..I will still continue to be healthy. To eat and exercise right. But I want to be as healthy as I can be; and I can’t help but think that with these injections and constant pricking..that I may be harming my body unnecessarily.

My question is do you think I was misdiagnosed and if so what do you think I should have been diagnosed with?
I talked to my endocrinologist about all of this, but he was as surprised as I was that my blood sugar is better without lantus and with a low supply of novolog.
He (endocrinologist) just said to continue what I have been doing and inform him of any changes at each appointment (every 3 months). And we would adjust things as needed.
I’m searching for opinions, not a new diagnoses.

For a diagnoses I will of course have that done by a GP..run a few tests and see how things turn out.
What would you qualify as a insulin over dose?
I know the lows and highs of blood glucose, yet whether the low is caused by exercise or insulin..that is the issue. Everyone tends to have lows in their blood sugar, after a long period of exercise and they require a certain amount of carbohydrates to revive their system.
I don’t take more than 3 units at a time now, and even then if it is that much, it is because I’m having an apple or another type of fruit.

I am trying to limit myself to only eating fruits when my blood sugar is 75-95. I’m working on it.

Do Americans Understand that their food is poison ?

02 Jun

GMO’s dominate the American food supply.. while the usual anti science mind set pervades in the American “Un” Conscious..
The rest of the world has stopped eating our food …
is it coincidence that we have the highest infant mortality rates, or that we have the second highest cancer population in the world (the old Soviet Union being Number 1) or that obesity and Type two Diabetes are pandemic even in our very young,

Wulfen.. the stats are per capita . population number has nothing to do with the data.
GMO’s are absolutely Poison…don’t think so, just keep eating the corn, we’ll have this talk in about another 15 years.

Electronic sub-dermal administration of insulin?

01 Jun

A long time ago I heard that endocrinologists were working on using real pancreatic cells placed on a microchip to administer insulin directly to diabetes patients. The cells were to be placed on a sub-dermally implanted wafer with internal power supply. A specialized membrane was to be used to encapsulate the cells allowing insulin out and life sustaining bodily fluids in. The body itself was to keep the cells alive. An on board blood-glucose analyzer was to measure glucose lvls once every minute or so and trigger a shock of some kind to the pancreatic cells to get them to produce the appropriate amount of insulin.

What happened with this project? Has it been abandoned? I can see lots of technical difficulties, but it sure seemed cool when I heard about it.

Dr prescribed Metformin to help me conceive. Any experiences?

31 May

My hubby and I have been TTC for almost a year. We are both young, healthy and the doctor couldn’t find out why it was to hard for us to get pregnant. About 2 months ago, my periods stopped, for no real reason. So the doctor ordered an ultrasound and found out that I have PCOS (poly cystic ovary syndrome), which is no big deal, since the cysts would eventually go away. But the doctor did prescribe Metformin to get me to ovulate. It’s normally a diabetes medication, but apparently it can help fertility as well.

She got me a 3 month supply and said if I wasn’t pregnant by the end of that, she would perscribe Clomid. She didn’t want to go that far yet because apparently Clomid can have a very serious side effects.

So Ladies, have you had any experience with these drugs?

Please give me your answer. I’m sorry to keep reposting, but I only got one answer?

Just found out I’m pregnant and the ob/gyn wants me to stop nursing immediately….?

29 May

My first son is 18 months old. He’s still nursing. Actually, the way he was nursing is what was really a dead give away I was pregnant. My supply dropped terribly and he nursed his little butt off to get my supply back up.
It’s finally up, REALLY good now.
I am type 1 diabetic, so automatically I’m a high-risk patient, even if I’m in good health…which I am right now. The best ever since I became diabetic.
I’m currently 4 weeks pregnant right now and I’ve continued to nurse.
I spoke with the ob/gyn and they said I must stop nursing IMMEDIATELY. They said nursing while pregnant can cause miscarriage, bleeding, premature labor etc etc etc. They said that was the reason they wanted me to stop immediately…not anything to do with diabetes.
They’ve got me totally freaked out now and I don’t even know what I should do at this point.
I feel awful having to make my son abruptly stop nursing because of this pregnancy, but then again, if there is a risk of losing the pregnancy, I don’t want to chance that either.
Anyone nurse while pregnant and make it the whole way through?? Some advice here would be awesome!
Thanks.

Oh, and I asked this question in nb&b because I know most of the women in the pregnancy section are only on their first pregnancy. A lot of you have already had children and are pregnant again! So hopefully I get some good advice!

I’m underweight and having a tingling feeling in my back.?

28 May

i’ve looked this up and it says this feeling could be diabetes. i’m currently having problems with being underweight, not taking in enough protein and over working out. could tingling this be a symptom of diabetes? could it be preveted if i do something now?? who can help me with my reluctance to take in more protein? 5 11 weight – 121. who can help me?

another reason could be (Another reason for back numbness or a tingling feeling can be because of being in one posture for a long period of time. Being in one posture reduces the flow of blood to complete body and therefore, this feeling occurs. It can start from the back as travel down your leg and hands. For people who work in front of the computer this is quite a normal phenomenon, it would do them quite good if they decide to get up once in a while and take a walk or stretch themselves to restore normal blood supply. Changing your posture once in a while too may do the trick for you. )

my posture has changed and this happens when i’m usually sitting all day in school, which is very uncomfortable.

Am i wrong?

27 May

Recently a friend of mine was fired from his work.
He has type II diabetes. He needed to go get his medication, so he went for it. His boss knows of his condition and knew that he had to go and get his supply which is the last day of the month. it has been like this and been agreed like this for 6 years. I have told him that he has a case for unfair dismissal on 2 grounds… first his boss knows and has agreed to this in the past, and 2nd, Diabetes is a life threatening disorder, and simply has to be treated and is a disability. and, during the time of his run to the pharmacy, most of the days work had already been done, so everyone of his colleagues were ok with him going. what i would like to know, is am i right in urging him to go ahead and claim unfair dismissal?

please answer any of these i would greatly appreciate it!
1. most cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis in older adults results from
a. An infection caused by mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis
b. A new infection due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a susceptible person not previously exposed to the organism
c. Reactivation of a previously acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
d. An exotoxin-producing strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

2. A young man sustained a severe chest injury with multiple rib fractures in a snowmobile accident. An important and relatively common complication of this type of injury is
a. Pneumothorax secondary to laceration of the lung by broken ends of the fractured ribs
b. Emphysema
c. Pnuemonia
d. Pulmonary embolism due to the lung injury

3. A patient with pulmonary tuberculosis develops tuberculosis of the kidney. The kidney infection occurred because
a. The tubercle bacillus is acid fast.
b. The organism was carried in the blood stream from the lungs to the kidneys.
c. The organism was excreted in the urine and ascended into the kidneys through the ureters from the bladder.
d. The patient has a positive tuberculin test.

4. Which of the following statements regarding the treatment of emphysema by lung volume reduction surgery is INCORRECT?

A. Surgical treatment was much more effective than medical treatment in almost all patients.
B. LVRS involves resecting segments of emphysematous upper lobes in order to reduce the size of the overinflated lungs so that the less severely affected lower lobes can function more efficiently.
C. The mortality rate of medically treated patients was similar to the mortality rate of surgically treated patients.
D. It may be suitable for some patients who have emphysema restricted to the upper lobes of the lungs.

5. True or false? If a bronchus or bronchiole becomes blocked so that no air can enter or leave the lung supplied by the blocked bronchus, the air within the lung supplied by the bronchus or bronchiole will be gradually absorbed, and the affected lung segment will collapse.
6. True or false? A tension pneumothorax usually subsides spontaneously and does not require treatment.
7. True or false? Hypersensitivity to proteins of the tubercle bacillus as demonstrated by a positive skin test (“tuberculin test”) indicates that the patient is immune to tuberculosis and is NOT susceptible to infection.
8. True or false? An interstitial pneumonia (primary atypical pneumonia) is usually caused by a pathogenic bacterium such as the pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae).
9.True or false? Infants born to mothers with diabetes are at increased risk of developing the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.
10. True or false? Infants delivered by cesarean section are at greater risk of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome than are infants delivered vaginally.
