How does insulin work in the body at the cellular level?

How does insulin work in the body at the cellular level?
How does insulin work in the body at the cellular level?
What gives it its steroidal properties?
I know that insulin increases cell tranlsation, which means more protein is produced, which builds muscle and causes weight gain, is there a way to stop this weight gain? Like maybe a chemical we can add to the insulin that will not affect the insulin, but will prevent weight gain, or prevent translation in cells, while not affecting normal protein production.

Insulin is a natural hormone that is secreted from the pancreas in response to high sugar levels.  Its main use is to regular sugar levels in the body.  The use of insulin in body building is a controversial subject as using it is constituted as steroid use and it is used to enhance a body building workout.

When blood sugar levels are high, insulin works to increase the storage of glucose which provides energy to the body.  The benefit of insulin use in body building is to provide more energy which allows for longer and more intense workouts.  While insulin does make for a conducive anabolic environment in the body, it can truly do more harm than good.

Obesity is an epidemic in most western countries. It is a critical issue as it affects children as young as 5 years old. How Insulin Functions in a Normal Body

Insulin is a self-correcting hormone which ebbs and flows as the body needs it. Insulin is part of an exquisitely-controlled system that signals the cells when to use energy, the liver when to produce it, the hunger centers when we need to refill, and the nerves to insure that we stay calm and collected.


The insulin that diabetics have to take is a replacement for this smoothly-operating natural system. Although insulin-dependent diabetics must take insulin or they will die from their disease, the spikes in their insulin injections don’t correspond well to how their insulin system would work in a normal body. As a result, even diabetics who measure their blood glucose often during the day and assiduously take their insulin shots are at much higher danger of organ failure, circulatory disease and other diseases that are common to diabetics.


In order to understand why diabetes can be so problematic, it’s best to understand how the insulin cycle works in a healthy body.


The pancreas produces insulin, and it detects the amount of glucose and insulin circulating in the body. The two parts of the pancreas – glucose-sensors and insulin producers – work hand-in-hand to insure that the levels of insulin and glucose are in balance at all times.


What does the pancreas really measure when it measures circulating glucose? It’s primarily monitoring the amount of sugar uptake by the cells. When we are working hard on a math problem, for example, the brain’s cells require a good deal more energy in the form of glucose than when our brains are relaxed. The brain is the most sensitive of our organs to glucose levels – that’s why we can achieve a ’sugar high’ after we eat a piece of candy, and a ’sugar low’ when our blood sugar level falls. The symptoms of too much sugar are excitability (particularly amongst children), while the symptoms of too-low glucose in the blood are lowered temperature, thirst, shivering and bad temper.


Other organs also depend on the right glucose level in order to assure that they function properly. When you run, for example, your leg and other muscles use a good deal of the glucose circulating freely in the blood. If this glucose weren’t replenished quickly, you could end up hypoglycemic, which means with low blood sugar. The muscles would soon lose their ability to work at their top level, and you would slow down.


Fortunately, the pancreas detects this lowering of the blood sugar levels and responds immediately with insulin secretions. These secretions tell the muscles “request more glucose,” and tell the liver “produce more glucose.” The elegant system therefore relies on this feedback loop in order to assure that cells have exactly the right amount of sugar available to fuel their activity.


The insulin-dependent diabetic cannot rely on this fine-tuning method. He or she is forced to ’spike’ their insulin by injecting it two to five times a day. Although they try to time their insulin injections around mealtimes, they are not able to duplicate the fine controls of insulin secretion in response to cellular needs.

How Insulin Helps Your Body Survive

Insulin is a hormone that has many functions in the body, but its main function is to control and regulate the levels of glucose in your blood. Without insulin, the blood sugar builds up in the body to such dangerously high levels that it begins to impact the functionality of some of the body’s major organs.

The process by which insulin works is relatively simple. Ordinarily, when we’ve finished a meal, the digestive system will break down the carbohydrates that you have consumed into glucose. Glucose, in addition to other nutrients, feeds into the blood stream. In non-diabetics, the glucose triggers the pancreas to release insulin. The insulin flows into the blood stream where it controls the amount of glucose that is allowed to enter into the various cells of the body where it provides the cells with sustenance and energy. The energy will either be used immediately by the cells or stored for future use as glycogen (i.e. stored glucose). The excess glucose or stored glycogen will remain in the body until needed where it will then be broken down into glucose to be used by your body.

In a person with diabetes, however, the pancreas is either unable to secrete insulin at all or unable to secrete enough to handle the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. Without the insulin, or security guard, the glucose is refused entry into the body’s cells. Since the body cannot use the glucose, it treats it as waste and excretes it from the body in the form of urine. The result is that the body’s cells eventually starve and the person experiences weight loss, hunger, and thirst. Eventually, without nourishment, the person will exhibit nerve and cardiovascular damage as major systems of the body begin to shut down and fail. Without intervention, the person dies.

In the case of diabetics where the body’s glucose management has gone wrong, patients will have to get the insulin from elsewhere. Doctors will attempt to mimic insulin’s role in the body by artificially introducing it into the body. Today’s doctors do this in one of three ways – by injections via syringe, by means of an insulin pump, or via the more recent insulin jet injector. The insulin jet injector is a high-pressure device that releases a stream of insulin under high pressure through the gaps between the body’s skin cells.

Fortunately, for many people that fear injections, many forms of oral diabetes medications are being developed. With these, a person can control his or her blood glucose levels easily without injections. Until recently, the problem with oral forms of insulin was that the body’s stomach acids would break them down and not enough of the insulin would actually make it into the bloodstream. One company that seems to have made a breakthrough, however, is Generex, a biotech company that produces an oral insulin spray and shows promising results.

Currently, there are over twenty types of insulin in the market. They vary in how long it takes before they start to work, how long they last in the body, and when they are most active in the bloodstream. The main goal of your doctor is to mimic as closely as possible the effects of natural insulin in your body. To that end, the type that you take will depend on the doctor’s personal preference as well as his evaluation of your blood
