I am barely 6 weeks pregnant and had a blood glucose test done last week, the results came back high at 220. Does anyone know if that is too early for gestational diabetes, or do you think I had diabetes before the pregnancy and just didn’t know about it?
The reason they tested so early is because my younger sister has diabetes; however, it’s juvenile diabetes (Type 1). This is my first pregnancy, so I’ve never had the problem before.

I just want to know if controlling my blood sugar and caloric intakeand not gaining weight while pregnant is still ok for my baby?
I am looking for personal experiences here, I’ve had three kids and this is my first case of diabetes-so please refrain from “ask your doctor” responses, I already know what my doc has to say.

Mine is 255 carbs a day, spread out as
Breakfast – 45
snack – 30
Lunch – 60
snack – 30
Dinner – 60
snack – 30
with no restrictions on anything but carb counts and monitoring blood sugar 4 times a day. Definitely not restricitive! So far I’ve had large cheeseburgers twice today for “snack”. lol.

I have been eating healthy during pregnancy. Fruits, berries. Should I be cutting out stuff like sugar and carbs to help prevent diabetes?
Also I’m going to start walking at least 30 mins a day too.

I found out a few days a go that I might have gestational diabetes. I immedietely did a lot of research but I would like to hear from other people’s experiences… what are the risks of having gestational diabetes and if anyone has had it, where there any comlications towards the baby and/or delivery. I am obviously eating differently and exercising more but want to know if I can do more. Iv’e heard that the baby can grow too big or not even make it after delivery which is a really big fear of mine. Thanks 2 everyone who answers!

I’m 24 weeks pregnant with my third child. I was tested for gestational diabetes in my other two pregnancies but never had it. Last night I started feeling really strange. I got weak and my finger tips and lips started tingling. Then I got really confused. I was at my mom’s house and my step-dad is a diabetic so we used some of his supplies to check my glucose level and it was really low. I drank some juice and ate some crackers and started to feel better. Then i rechecked and it was back up to normal. I have NEVER had a problem with this…pregnant or not. I thought with gestational diabetes that it is always high and not low. Is that always the case or can it be low as well? I have an appointment tomorrow and this is the one where they do the screening for it. I just want some opinions if any of you have had an experience with this. Thanks in advance!

Gestational Diabetes is a temporary form of insulin resistance that usually occurs halfway through a pregnancy. It results from excessive hormone production in the body, or the inability of the pancreas make the additional insulin that is needed during pregnancy in women with no previous history of diabetes. Without enough insulin, sugar builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia.
Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women although it is usually goes away after childbirth. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to problems for both the mother and the child. Although insulin does not cross through the placenta to the baby, sugar and other nutrients do.
Extra blood sugar goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood sugar level. This causes the baby’s pancreas to produce extra insulin to get rid of the blood sugar, which can lead to microsomatia or a fat baby syndrome. Microsomatia develops because extra blood sugar and insulin cause the baby’s body to produce extra fat.
Babies with microsomatia are prone to other health problems including damage to their shoulders during birth. Because of the extra insulin newborns may have very low blood sugar levels at birth and may also have a higher risk of breathing problems.
The treatment of gestational diabetes should start quickly to prevent adverse effects to the mother and the baby. It should aim to keeping blood sugar level equal to those of pregnant women who do not have gestational diabetes. Treatment includes special meal plans and scheduled physical activity as well as daily blood sugar testing, so as to keep it under control.
In developing countries like India, a special kind of diabetes is noticed. It was designated as Malnutrition Related Diabetes in 1995 by WHO. It occurs largely in young malnourished individuals in developing countries. In India it affects nearly one percent of the country’s diabetic population.
It is characterized by early onset, usually before the age of 30 years, and requires insulin for controlling blood sugar.
Another variation of Malnutrition Related Diabetes is Fibro Calculous Pancreatic Diabetes. It has high prevalence in tropical and developing countries. In India it occurs more in southern states. It is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain. Malnutrition Related Diabetes is though to be related to malnutrition during natal and early childhood.
