People with a learning disability or mental health condition are far more likely to have diabetes, respiratory illness, coronary heart disease and other heart conditions which makes participation harder for these already excluded groups.
There is a much higher rate of obesity amongst people with learning disabilities (35 per cent, compared with a general population figure of 22 per cent). The figure for women with learning disabilities is particularly high at 40 per cent.
Over 60 per cent of people with serious mental health conditions smoke. Providing the right support for them to quit could play a significant part in helping Government achieve its target of reducing the proportion of the British public who smoke from 28 per cent to 24 per cent by 2010.
People with learning disabilities, especially more severe learning disabilities, have much lower rates of cervical screening, mammography and other routine tests than other citizens.

I am a teen/young adult. About 3 and a half months ago i became a vegetarian. Since then my health has decreased. It was slow to begin with and i didnt really pay much attention at first but in the past month my health has taken a turn for the worse. I experience bad headaches daily, weakness, fatigue, irritability, drowsiness, and shakiness especially in my hands and legs and feet. I know i do struggle with maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet. I went to the doctor and they did a blood test and it is being sent off and i have an appointment in a week. There, the doctors talked to me about anemia and juvenile diabetes. They did not specify which one they thought it would be. Juvenile diabetes nor anemia runs in my family. I just want to know what sounds most like what i have anemia or juvenile diabetes. i have done lots of research of symptoms of both, and i have experienced a lot of symptoms with diabetes such as constant thirst frequent urination, irritability, however i have not experienced that much weight loss. i can understand where i may have anemia because of lack of iron from no longer having meat in my diet, however rice does provide iron and rice is a major staple in my diet. i eat it daily. Which of these are you leaning towards. please help me i just would like to know some form of indication.

Some may think that its not worth the money to be spent on health screenings and check ups just because they ‘feel’ good about themselves… or taking the word of advice from General Practitioners are good enough…
However, diseases do NOT discriminate and we may or may not feel symptoms and obviously we DO NOT like to find out the ‘ugly truth’ when test results reveals certain clues about our health problems.
So… its best we put money issues aside and keep a regular health check a priority. It may not only save YOUR life, but ones you love too (by encouraging them to undergo similar check ups, etc.)… most of us take our health for granted until its too late, and that is the leading cause for increasing numbers of cancer/ heart/ diabetes, etc. patients and other deadly diseases.

YES, this is related to travel… a health check is necessary in order to travel to some countries
late last year, President bush passed a bill that diabetes is a disability. It was written in one of the diabetes magazines. Yet, I can’t get health insurance. When I find a carrier who will insure me, the price is so high, I can’t afford it and my diabetes supplies. Without the insurance I can’t afford the supplies. I can’t use my pump because I can’t afford the infusion sets. I take my insulin, if I’m lucky, once a week, because I can’t afford it. I don’t know what to do. MA in Minnesota does have a program that will insure a person who has a disability and is working. I would pay a sliding fee. The problem is that since social security doesn’t recognize diabetes as a disability like the president and congress does, neither does the state of Minnesota. Any one have any ideas that may help me?

My girlfriend, a type-1 diabetic, was at a miserable job for 3 months waiting to begin health insurance. After putting up with it for that long, she had to quit. Now, most other jobs she has been interviewing at require a 3 month wait until health coverage starts. What can we do to get her health insurance in-between jobs, even though she has a “pre-existing condition”? I am worried about something happening to her in the meantime and we need to get her insured. Short of getting married and adding her to my plan, are there any viable alternatives? Thanks.
