Insulin pumps for diabetics? ?

02 Sep

Hi,
I have a insulin pump now but I’m looking to get a new one. I have the deltec pump now and I hate having to buy my supplies through them. I have good insuerince but it cost over $400 a month for supplies. I would much rather buy my supplies through the pharmacy. So does any one know of a pump that lets you do that? If not do you know of a good pump that you have used? Why?
Thanks for the help
Julie

Help with insulin pump expenses?

25 Aug

My 15 year-old son has Type I diabetes and was on the Omni Pod system until my husband’s truss plant closed this past September. We lost our insurance and now my son is really struggling to control his blood sugars with MDI-which didn’t work real well in the first place which is why he was on the Pod. The Pods are $365 for a 20 day supply. Needless to say, with only unemployment comp. for income, we can’t afford this much needed therapy. We tried DSHS, but they won’t contract with the Insulet Company (makers of the Pod [which is an absolute God send of a product]). Does anyone know of a philanthropic organization that would help us get this life saving equipment?
MDI=Multiple Daily Injections. He has gone the “much” less expensive route of needles and his Bgs are all over the place. MDI DOES NOT in any way shape or form perform on par with a pump. I also tend to measure “expense” according to my son’s present and more importantly, future health. You know, kidney failure, blindness, premature death…take care of Bg’s now and you won’t have the “expense” of major system failures and the crippling mental anguish that comes with living this way. Sorry if I come off snotty. My son has been living with this disorder for eight years. We know what works for him and what doesn’t. MDI doesn’t.

I am about to start taking Metformin for insulin resistance. What should I expect?

17 Aug

I was told that I have insulin resistance by the endocrinologist yesterday. She gave me a prescription for the extended release metformin. What side effects are there that you have experienced if you take it? Also, did it help you lose weight. Im already eating healthy and less, but the weight isnt moving. Will metformin help?

What is the best insulin pump on the market? ?

11 Aug

Our son has used the Disetronic one in the past, but now they are no longer making parts for the ones he has and we thought the Paradigm Mini med one would be nice because of the continuous glucose monitoring system ( we saw that it is the only one that has this). I read a post somewhere that a person said there is alot of Minimed supplies online now ( I guess for sale by individuals) and they thought maybe it is not the best option anymore and that is the reason there are supplies for sale. I personally don’t know What do u think?

Insulin resistance and a vegan/vegetarian diet?

07 Aug

I heard that a vegan/vegetarian diet could help improve insulin resistance, but it seems like that would probably promote a high carbohydrate diet. A high carbohydrate diet aggravates my insulin resistance and makes me gain weight rapidly. I’m interested in becoming vegetarian, but I don’t want to gain weight.

Does anyone know anything about this or could anyone provide me with links so I could gather more information about it?

Insulin pump, animas 2020 and one touch ping, OmniPod?

30 Jul

I need to get a new pump since I have the cozmore and they have gone out of business. My top three ideas so far are the one touch ping and 2020 made by animas and the OmniPod. But i have questions and if any one owns and wears one of these, a little help is highly appreciated.

For the Omnipod, how big is the thing I wear, compared to a everyday object. Do you like it? Do you find it expensive compared to other company’s monthly for supplies? How does inserting it work, where is the needle?

Some for the other 2 pumps, other then size.

Thanks for the help
Julie

As a treatment of type 1 diabetes, why can’t insulin be given orally?

29 Jul

1. as a lipid, the GI tract would digest insulin

2. the immune system attacks any insulin found within the GI tract

3. as a protein, the GI tract would digest insulin

4. given orally, insulin would be absorbed too slowly to be effective

5. given orally, insulin stimulates the secretion of glucagon; such glucagon secretion is antagonistic to the effects of insulin

How do you get rid of the “rash” insulin resistance gives you?

27 Jul

Diabetes is a disease that runs through my family and i’ve recently discovered i have insulin resistance, which causes a “rash” on the back of my neck and underarms. I’ve lost some weight and been watching my eating, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Is there a better solution to rubbing my skin raw to try to get rid of it?

I need help getting my insulin!?

23 Jul

I just recently lost my insurance and don’t have a way to pay for my diabetic supplies. I really need to get some Humalog and Lantus insulin. I went to walgreens and said it was an emergency, they wouldn’t even help me out and they still wanted me to pay over $200 for the insulin… I just cannot afford this! Is there anywhere I can get my insulin for free and fast?

Concerning feline diabetes, anyone know of alternative meds beside insulin injections.?

22 Jul

My cat’s having a difficult time with the shots-growling & hissing when he sees me. Something oral would be better. I’m a little leary of herbal remedies unless someone has first hand success with it.

How can you prevent “No Delievery’s” in an insulin pump?

19 Jul

I have gotten so many No Delieveries with my insulin pump since last Friday! I have found that in the past, after I insert the pump, that if I give insulin right after it is inserted, I get a lot more No Delieveries. I have no clue why this happens. We have called the pump company, and they have no explanation for it, besides that my site is bad. I have checked it and it looks fine, so I have no clue.

Could it be related to giving insulin right after you put it in?

We are very low on supplies because of all of the changes we had to do.

What could this be caused by?
Minimed 722 is the kind.
I use the Quickserter to get it in. Minimed did a test with it over the phone and proved that it was functioning correctly.
