I am a diabetic that is currently using an insulin pump for my diabetes management and I have insurance but the insurance that I have does not cover the extra costs with the pump supplies, which is huge. I am not the only one with this issue I am sure. My fear is that I will have to stop using the insulin pump because of the cost which will take away the one thing that has made me feel like a normal person again or as close to as can be. I feel that there are companies making huge amounts of money from the people that have diabetes whom have no other choice but to make them richer because if they don’t they die, there just seems to be an imbalance there. So please if there is any one out there that might have any ideas that can be done with this unfair imbalance of the american way.

I have a 3 yr old with type1 diabetes and she is going to get an insulin pump in may. I’m really nervous about how she will react. and about if it is really easier. I just don’t want to put her through more stress ( and my self too ) if it isn’t going to work as good. ( she has had a couple of problems with insulins, we had to switch a couple of times.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a little over two years ago and have been taking insulin shots ever since. The shots have become a real pain to deal with everyday so i want to consider an insulin pump…i have heard of the omnipod too….which is the best pump to use and does it check your blood sugar for you without you having to do it yourself???
And are the pumps really better than insulin shots?
ANY SUGGESTIONS???

My 5 year old cousin has an insulin pump. We want to take him swimming. What is the best way to secure his site? We’ve tried Tegaderm and Band-Aids. Any suggestions? We don’t want to water log the site. If he’s in the bath very long, the skin around his site becomes loose.
If you have a pump, what do you do to keep water away from your site?
Thanks in advance!

I’m a type 1 diabetic for just a little over a year now. My PCP wants me on a pump, along with the Endo. I’m prescribed to only be on 2 shots a day for the convenience due to my job of being in law enforcement. But, almost every day I end up taking 3 to 4 shots anyway.
I’ve had EMS wake me up because of being hypo at a level of 14, which then resulted ina trip to the ER.
I also have the predawn phenomenon and daily wake up with my blood glucose at 200+, and most days are around 280-290. If I take even one extra unit of insulin at night, I’ll bottom out before the raise kicks in.
I’m trying to get the One Touch Ping, but BCBS of Kansas refuses to approve it because my A1C is 6.9 and doesn’t meet their requirement of 7.0. They are also using the excuse of the prescribed 2 shots and ignoring the fact that I take at least 3 to 4 a day. So, by their guidelines, I’m very well controlled and don’t need a pump.
My Endo told me since they denied the request and the appeal, its not worth anyones time to do a peer-to-peer because it is BCBS and they will not approve it.
I’m at about my wits end with BCBS. Open Enrollement has passed so, I’m stuck with BCBS until the end of 2010. Otherwise, I’d go with another company that Animas told me I would have already approved the pump.
Does anyone have any suggestions. I need a pump, but I can’t figure out how to go about it. Looking at the BCBS list of requirments, I meet all but 2. And by reading it, it looks like they should be allowing me to have one, but they continue to say I don’t. A pump will help me out greatly since I work nights and when I have court that is usualy a time of only getting a couple hours of sleep before going into work. I can’t take insulin, because I may just drive to the court house just to turn around and go back to bed. My schedule is ruff for a diabetic.
Thanks in advance.

I’m looking to get a 4 year old an insulin pump, but websites only mention what to look for when selecting a pump. Anyone know of a site, or can personally recommend a pump for a young child? Please let me know what advantages/disadvantages you’ve discovered after you got your child one. Thanks
