Stocking up on insulin, for long term storage.?

22 May

I KNOW that you are only supposed to use insulin for 30 days after it has been opened. I am not looking for tips on how to control my diabetes, I am diabetic who undestands my disease and control my blood sugars well. I am looking to stock up on insulin and have a large supply in my fridge in case of disaster or something like that, where I would need to have my own supply of insulin for a long period of time. I am wondering what would be the best way to go about doing this. What kind of insulin lasts the longest, and so forth. And I would be storing it unopened with the seal still on.

Question for long term type 2 diabetics?

09 May

If you’ve had type 2 diabetes for 20 years or longer has anyone gone without any complications or are complications simply inevitable since it is a progressive disease?
I was referring to compliant diabetics who have always maintained good control of their diabetes.

Are complications inevitable as we age?

Are the preservatives in injectable insulin harmful long term?

08 May

I know there are several preservatives used in insulin (I use short and long acting). My doctor was citing a recent study that identified long term use of insulin and a link to leukocyte function solely based on the preservatives. I did find the one study, but are there more? Does anyone have direct evidence? Personal experience?

I reappled for long term & short term insurance at work and once again was denied. Is this LEGAL?

26 Apr

A few days ago, I received my letter denying me long term & short term insurance coverage. The letter stated, “As you know, the insurance you are applying for is medically evaluated and certain health standards must be met to be eligible for enrollment. Another review has been made of the insurability applications you completed. Based on your condition of insulin dependant diabetes diagnosed 1989, it has been determined that our original decision to deny Short and Long Term Disability insurance coverage cannot be changed. Other pertinent health history includes high blood pressure and acid reflux.” The letter goes on to state I have 90 days to appeal this decision. I must say I HAD this insurance and dropped it shortly after starting at The State of Texas. Does this mean I will never be eligible or should I fight this with an appeal? I can brag and say I don’t call in sick (very often) and do a great job at work. I work 13 hour days and have a 2 year old son!!!!!!!!!

What can a type-1 diabetic do for short term health insurance?

22 Feb

My girlfriend, a type-1 diabetic, was at a miserable job for 3 months waiting to begin health insurance. After putting up with it for that long, she had to quit. Now, most other jobs she has been interviewing at require a 3 month wait until health coverage starts. What can we do to get her health insurance in-between jobs, even though she has a “pre-existing condition”? I am worried about something happening to her in the meantime and we need to get her insured. Short of getting married and adding her to my plan, are there any viable alternatives? Thanks.

Long Term Complications of Diabetes

20 Nov

A diabetic person cannot make normal use of sugar, and so sugar builds up in the blood. The kidneys discharge some of the excess sugar in the urine. In severe cases of diabetes, fats and proteins cannot also be used normally.

The type 1 diabetes strikes some people so suddenly that the lack of insulin causes an emergency condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. There is excess urination, thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and difficulty in breathing. If the patient is not treated promptly, he may go into diabetic coma with fatal results.

In type 2 diabetes, the patient has normal or even above normal production of insulin. But their bodies do not respond efficiently to the insulin. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes are excessive urination, great thirst, hunger and loss of weight and strength.

Complications of Diabetes

It is very important to take care of diabetes as improper care can give rise to several complications. If the blood sugar level is kept under control, one can prevent many health problems. Many people come to know of their diabetes only when they develop one of its complications.

1. The structural and functional abnormalities of diabetic complications are the glycation of structural proteins and the production of advanced glycation end products with their deposition in various tissues.
2. Most patients with type 2 diabetes also tends to be obese and hypertensive.
3. Angina is a long term complication of diabetes.
4. Difficulty in walking with chronic ulceration of feet due to diabetic neuropathy and also diabetic microangiopathy and diabetic nephropathy due to small blood vessel disease.
5. Diabetic patients are at higher risk of developing atheroscelerosis.
6. Wound healing is delayed in diabetics because of neuropathy, and hyperglycaemia.
7. Intermittent claudication and gangrene due to atherosclerosis
8. Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy
9. Diabetes affects the blood vessels, the blood and the heart.
10. Cardiac failure is also another long term complication of diabetes.

I hope this article has covered some of the long term complications of diabetes. Knowing these complications will help you to prevent them.
