From the Western scientific perspective, diabetes mellitus is an inherited endocrine disorder characterized by a variable degree of carbohydrate intolerance and specific vascular lesions (i.e., thickening of the capillary basement membrane.) The endocrine aspect of this disease is the lack of sufficient pancreatic insulin to take up nutrients from the blood, in particular, glucose. The short term danger would then be a sort of tissue starvation leading to rapid fat metabolism leading to ketoacidosis and ultimately to metabolic acidosis, shock and death. The long term dangers involve vascular lesions beginning in the lower extremities and fundus of the eye leading to tissue death, loss of sight and limb amputati… More >>

Is it possible to use insulin syringes more than 1 time?

My sister’s cat had been on 1 insulin shot each A.M. Her last visit to the vet showed an increase in her glucose level, & she needs to have it 2 times a day. Would it be possible to use the same syringe for both shots, being careful to wipe the needle off with alcohol, or would this not be acceptable to do this?

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy: how long is recovery time?

Employee with very problematic attendance history says she is scheduled for treatment of diabetic retinopathy–treatment of bleeding or to fix it. Assuming true, what’s a realistic length of time to expect her to be absent from work?
She also says that perhaps she has partially detached retina. Wouldn’t that be an emergency requiring immediate treatment? Or am I wrong on that? Recovery time?

Skidaddle Bags, Changing the Look of Diabetes One Bag at a Time

My personal experience with diabetes for almost 5 years now has been through my daughter’s diagnosis. It was something I never thought I would have to deal with, and the road has been rough at times. My thought about living with diabetes is that although the condition is extremely challenging to live with, maintaining a positive attitude is the key to a more comfortable lifestyle—and happiness. It’s also important to educate yourself. I think diabetes became a lot less scary when I learned what it was all about.

I always like to recommend that families living with diabetes find a group or organization that understands first hand what living with diabetes is like. And it’s important to have support for the entire family, since diabetes doesn’t affect only the one who is diagnosed. We are also involved with two organizations that are working to find a cure. One of our favorite ways to raise money is an annual “Walk to Cure Diabetes” in our hometown. It has been rewarding in so many ways.

The ideas for my unique diabetes supply bag designs come from observing my family day-to-day. Because we live with diabetes I can easily see what works or what is missing, and customize bags for the needs of those with diabetes.  Skidaddle Bags offers a practical and positive approach by creating designs that appeal to people of all ages. Kids love the funky color combinations and adults love that they are more of a fashion accessory than the typical dull medical bag.

It is my goal to help people see that living with diabetes isn’t limiting, and carrying diabetes supplies doesn’t have to be stigmatizing. You can still go anywhere and do anything, and with my Skidaddle bags you can happily do it in style.

Do You Think There Will Be A Cure For Diabetes Any Time Soon?

My daughter has had Diabetes since whe was 11 yrs. old, she is not 43. Thirty years of insulin injections, testing her blood, worrying over high sugar readings, kidneys, amputations, etc. It just goes on and on. I pray that stem cell research will help, but Bush keeps rejecting it. Do you know of any other countries that are working on some kind of cure or help for these poor people who have to tend to this disease every day of their life. She can barely afford the supplies, but works all the time. She has no health insurance, cannot afford it. She is without a family nor husband to over look her care. So many are like this, even my grandson came down with it. It is not hereditary they say, but they just eventually give up, and tired of fooling with it. What do you now about any research, or even any thoughts about advances in this disease?
