There is no guarentee, but getting his blood sugar under better control gives him the best shot at reducing the pain.
November 8, 2009 9:17 am | #1He needs to keep it under 140 at all times, including one and two hours after meals. (that’s when it tends to rise, it MUST be under that number after all meals from now on to see improvement).
(If you are in Canada or the UK, it must be under 7.8 at all times. )
High blood sugar is what causes diabetic neuropathy, and getting it under tight control will help reduce the sypmtoms. It worked for me and others too. I hope it works for him, but he really has to keep it under tight control every day.
He should also try to drink more water. It can help flush out excess sugar in his bloodstream, and also helps the kidneys remove toxins.
Tegretol, B12(mecobalamin) amd of course Tramadol until pain is gone..

Get glucose level in Check.
I have this too, it’s terrible and the pain is so unbelievable – I really can’t believe that there isn’t something out there to help. Right now I’m taking neurontin, he’s given my darveset and I can’t bring myself to take narcotics. I’ve tried cymbalta and the side effects were worst than the actual neuropathy pain, and then I found some arthritis treatment cream in a avon book and found that to work the best at numbing the pain a bit so I can sleep. Just tell her to find some very comfortable shoes, socks, and keep her feet warm and healthy. that’s all I try to do – good luck to her, I feel her pain!

anodyne therepy is very helpful — you use a machine to stimulate the nerves in your legs and feet (velcros around your legs) my mom does her legs about 30 minutes per day at least 3 days a week
medicare wil pay for anodyne machine (if they are that old) have to have a doctors note stating that you need the machine.
the machine is used in your home at your convenience
hope this helps!
Not to bombard you with tons of reading, but I figure it’s better for you to read it for yourself….so here goes….
November 8, 2009 11:24 am | #5This article outlines both the condition and treatment options. Sounds like B12 deficiency is a big problem.http://www.lef.org/protocols/neurologica…
And here, Vitamin E and C are recommended. I’m a huge advocate of C for it’s ability to prevent wrinkles….hey, I’m hopeful….and it’s ability to dissolve and prevent arterial blockages. We don’t know all that it can do but it’s one of the most powerful anti oxidants around.http://www.burningneuropathy.com/interio…
I hope your friend does better in the future. My mom is a diabetic too…and is worried about what might happen to her later in life.
I was on Cymbalta and didn’t realize that I had neuropathy. When I came off of it (I was using it as a anti-depressant) I had to take something. I’m using Neurontin now. It makes me sleepy. I have to take the biggest part of it at bedtime, but other than that it works pretty well.
November 8, 2009 12:14 pm | #6Sometimes I have had patients that the drug Lyrica seems to help relieve symptoms. Also there is an over the counter herbal med that I cant think of the name of now, it is advertised in Diabetes Forecast magazine. Good luck to your friend
November 8, 2009 1:10 pm | #7The best thing for your friend is to have him start using an insulin pump. Insulin pump therapy is proven by clinical studies to help prevent diabetes complications such as neuropathy.
