your doctor might test in the office just with a pin and a tuning fork to see how you sense pinprick and vibration sense. S/He might also send you for an electromyelogram, where they measure your nerve conduction with little needles and can tell how much conduction is slowed, and make sure that the problem is in the peripheral nerves, not higher up, like in the spinal cord.

I had nerve conduction tests. The hospital wires your toes up to a machine and put a probe onto the nerve they want to test then zap you with a charge. Using a computer the response time is measured and compared with a database. The probe and the wires are moved around. In my case they tested my hands too.
It was uncomfortable being zapped but not too painful. Certainly nothing to worry about.
