Why Does A Diabetic Who Has Insulin Injections Have To Still Be Careful Of There Diet?
If you are injecting some insulin, doesn’t that mean that you can just eat anything as long as you take enough insulin to make the food go away? Because I know when people take pills the food still puts sugar in them, but if you put the insulin in your body, why do you have to eat only a certain diet? I’m very confused about this?

Same reason a non-diabetic needs to eat a healthy diet, to take care of your body. If you become overweight or obese, the diabetes is much more difficult to control. If you increase your chlorestoral, the heart disease risk that comes with diabetes becomes even more dangerous. There’s no reason not to occasionally treat yourself if you have good control, though. It helps keep you sane.

Diabetes can increase a persons risk of heart disease, stroke, vascular and nerve problems so if you start adding other risk factors like being overweight, drinking excessively or smoking, your chances of developing one of the aforementioned nasties is increased

There are two types of diabetes, but I am addressing only type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by resistance to insulin. Type 2 diabetics produce sufficient amounts of insulin, but the body does not respond to it the way that it should, leading to elevated blood sugar. If a person eats poorly, causing their body to require even more insulin, the only thing they will be succeeding in doing is speeding up the progression of the disease. Diabetes is a progressive disease and becomes harder and harder to control over time. It is wise to try to slow this progress down by eating sensibly, getting adequate exercise and keeping weight under control.
September 25, 2009 10:33 am | #3i have only been diabetic for 4 yrs and i wish it was that easy i wish i could eat whatever i wanted as long as i take a shot but the truth is i hate having to take shots with every meal please extra at times due to spikes. I’m what they call a brittle diabetic even with insulin i have been in dka 6 times.so i have to monitor my diet and follow it and take my insulin as instructed or I’ll be back in dka and that is not fun. and if your not careful and take to much insulin you can become hypoglycemic which can be very dangerous as well.i don’t know if this helps any but its what i know

September 25, 2009 12:05 pm | #5A lot of diabetics do eat anything they want. Some avoid fat, some can’t handle a particular food but can eat something that others can’t handle. It’s an individual disease for sure.
Personally, I watch what I eat (with a little less carbohydrate than most people) because it makes control SO much easier, and it gives me less of a BG spike after meals. Works for me – but each to their own
